Latin American Contemporary Art Projects—a new art gallery—focuses on Charlotte’s growing Latin American population
LOGAN CYRUS
LaCa Projects opened this spring with poetics of erratic materialism, an exhibit of paintings by artist Juan Dolhare.

Mecklenburg County’s Latino population has nearly doubled since 2000, yet the cultures of Central and South America are still underrepresented in the local arts scene. The newly opened Latin American Contemporary Art Projects, near Freedom Drive and West Morehead Street, hopes to bridge this gap. “We will never take a platform or a stand about anything political,” says gallery director Neely Verano. “We won’t get into that.” However, she says LaCa Projects will “help build understanding and social awareness” within Charlotte’s increasingly diverse population. In addition to curating exhibits, this summer the gallery plans to offer open studio hours, allowing visitors to watch artists at work. For hours and exhibit info, go to lacaprojects.com.
