Let Them Eat Cake

Notes on Wedding Cake Etiquette

While catching up with a longtime friend who's blissfully engaged at the Something Old, Something New bridal showcase this evening at Heist in NoDa, we got onto the subject of cakes. And while any bride to-be will be quick to learn all the fiscal particulars of these wedding confections, actual traditions or etiquette are not exactly first on a baker's list of discussion points. So as we chatted about cake tier costs and pretty platters, my mind wandered to the lesser known minutia of wedding sweets. While we live in a world that's constantly straying away from the grain of tradition, I'm a firm believer that sometimes, especially in the setting of 'I do,' it's nice to keep some long-lived etiquette intact. So here are a few points on proper cake rules, mixed in with a few updates that are every bit as acceptable for the modern bride to-be. So you can have your cake and eat it too!
