New Midtown Boutique Silverfly Is Cleared for Takeoff

New boutique Silverfly aims to become a new shopping destination for men

Keith Alyea and Fidel Montoya opened Silverfly in November.

With its dark, brooding décor, new men’s clothing boutique Silverfly resembles an exclusive lounge. Masculine details such as dark cabinetry and richly upholstered furniture complete the look. Add in regular events like beer tastings and golf clinics, and Silverfly starts to feel as much like a guys’ hangout as it does a store.

That’s the idea, says Fidel Montoya, forty-three, who opened the shop with Keith Alyea, thirty-nine, in November. The name comes from the fly on a pair of jeans and the silver in the zipper. Montoya says he wanted to make shopping feel less like a chore for men, and “to give Charlotte men a one-stop shop for denim, T-shirts, outerwear, workout clothes, grooming, and accessories.” The shop, located in Metropolitan at Midtown, has a well-edited assortment from coveted brands like Vince, Chadburry, and Ben Sherman, an impressive collection of skincare and grooming products from R. Cooper, and sneakers by Civic Duty. Prices range from $30 to $600. Montoya says he tries to highlight regional brands, and Silverfly is the only Charlotte store that carries men's line of the popular North Carolina–based line Raleigh Denim.
