Peonies: King of Flowers

The spring favorites bloom in May
LOGAN CYRUS

Peonies peak in May,  just in time for spring wedding bouquets and early mornings at the farmers’ market. They can be red, purple, pink, cream, yellow, and many shades in between, but you have to catch them fast, because the season lasts only three to four weeks.

In China, they are known as the “king of flowers.” In Charlotte, one place to find them is the Elizabeth Lawrence Garden at Wing Haven in Myers Park. This year, if the weather cooperates, you may spot them at Wing Haven’s 20th-annual Gardeners’ Garden Tour on May 10 and 11. For more information, call 704-331-0664 or visit winghavengardens.com.
