Thursday, Aug. 11
Miss Gay North Carolina 2016 Pageant
In its first year of competition, in 1979, Brandy Alexander took the crown at this pageant.You can see her mural enshrined in Plaza Midwood facing Thomas Street across the street from the Dish Restaurant. This year’s two-day pageant of female impersonators begins tonight with the interviews, evening gown and talent portions. The pageant continues Friday evening with more talent, questions and the crowning. The evening of pageantry is at The Scorpio, 2301 Freedom Drive. For more information, go here.
Friday, Aug. 12
Maker’s Mark Dinner and Release of The Ballantyne’s Custom Bourbon Barrel
This dinner features courses paired with bourbon, including The Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge’s custom bourbon. There will also be live music and an opportunity to learn about the bourbon-making process. Reception begins at 6:30 p.m., and the diner is at 7 p.m. Reservations are required for this event, which costs $85 per person. Call 704-248-4100. Pokemon Go Bar Crawl
All right, Charlotte, this has gone too far. A dozen EpiCentre bars play host to this child’s game tonight with “hidden” Pokemon at each venue. If you collect a PokeCrawl Card from each venue, you’ll be entered to win a Pokemon Go Bar Crawl prize. A phone charging station will be available at Bubble because this is what we have come to as a culture. Tickets cost about $12, and the evening starts at 7 at Rooftop 210. 210 E. Draught Two-Year Anniversary Party
Draught is entering its terrible twos, and you’re invited to help celebrate. The bar will have live music, drink specials and plenty of giveaways. The evening gets started at 7 at 601 S. Cedar St. There is no admission fee.
Saturday, Aug. 13
The U.S. National Whitewater Center turns 10 this month, and you’re invited to its Festival X. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with SUP yoga (yoga atop stand-up paddle boards), followed by regular yoga at 11:30, a cornhole tournament at 3 p.m., a bike race at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and live music from 4 p.m. until about 10 p.m. There’s no admission fee, but the tournaments and races do have an admission fee. LoSo Block Party
Good luck getting anywhere in South End today. This block party is taking over the neighborhood. Sugar Creek Brewing, The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Great Wagon Road Distilling Company, The Broken Spoke, Doc Porter's Distillery, Red Clay Ciderworks, Infinity Ballroom Charlotte and CrossFit Mecklenburg have planned this massive block party. The party will also feature a stage with live music throughout the day. Additionally, there will be at least seven food trucks and seven vendors on site. There’s no admission fee to this block party that begins at 11 a.m. between Southside Drive and Yancey Road.
Catch ‘Em All Bar Crawl
You’ve got to be kidding us with this. There’s not only one Pokemon-themed bar crawl in Charlotte this weekend. There are two. We give up. This one starts at Tilt on Trade at 6 p.m., and tickets cost about $16. Tickets include access to charging stations, of course. Buy them here.

Liberate Your Palate Craft Cocktail Tour
Think of this as a sophisticated citywide bar crawl. For $30, you’ll get a “Cocktail Passbook,” which gives you access to $5 cocktails throughout the city.
