Real Wedding: Jehana & Wycliffe
October 9, 2010 Hilton Charlotte Center City

When Jehana James and Wycliffe Okumu were doing their internal-medicine residencies in Indianapolis, Wycliffe was interested in hearing all about Jehana’s recent experience working in a Kenyan hospital. “He invited me over for Kenyan tea,” remembers the bride. “Since he’s from Kenya, he wanted to show off his skills.”
Two years later, Wycliffe’s proposal came—where else?—in Kenya, on safari. But for their wedding, the couple chose to highlight their hometown’s upscale urban side with a modern event at the Hilton Charlotte Center City.
On the big day, the bride, in a 2 Be gown bought at New York Bride & Groom, exchanged vows with Wycliffe, looking dapper in a tux rented from Jim’s Formal Wear, in the hotel’s front courtyard. Pastor Samuel Washington officiated, and to keep the mood light, jazz band Jazz Revolution accompanied the party’s entrance and exit.
The reception followed in a hotel ballroom, where 100 guests dined on filet mignon, salmon, vegetables, and potatoes, plus a simple cake by Nona’s Sweets. After a night of dancing with DJ Audio to Go, the couple flew off to honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. But, says Jehana, “Two months later we found ourselves in Mombasa, Kenya, for a second honeymoon!”
