School of Frocks
Countless times I have encountered, counciled and assisted mothers who are clueless when it comes to the wedding day look. Let's just go ahead and rule out those dated jacket/dress combos that somehow still find life on local clothing racks. With ample evening cardigans and updated jackets in the market–not to mention a plethora of chic sleeved dresses, there's no need to revert back to 1989 for the MOB ensemble. The key with choosing a dress for the mother of the bride is understated elegance. No matter your shape or size, it's not the day to flaunt a svelt figure in a form-fitting gown, nor is it the day to don a show-stopping print or any shade of white or ivory. The MOB should opt for deep, saturated jewel tones and stick with the silhouette she knows works for her body type. Furthermore, just like the bride, undergarments are a key outfit component. Don't overlook or underestimate the power of shapewear and a properly fitted bra. A quick trip to I.C. London, Victoria's Secret or Nordstrom working with a seasoned associate will do just the trick. Keep jewelry to a minimum, and when in doubt, go for black. One can rarely go wrong with a solid black dress. Here are a few of my favorite picks.
