Summer-Blooming Perennials

Plant these blooms for gorgeous color this summer.
Purple Coneflower.

A perennial is a plant that continually re-blooms. Basically, it will bloom during a certain season, then go dormant during its inactive season, then re-bloom again in its active season. The best part about perennials is that you don't have to keep replanting them like you do with annuals, which only have one-year life spans. Perennials, on the other hand, can live for years and years as long as you care for them correctly.

There are quite a few stunning perennial varieties that are long-blooming. As they come back out in the summer, you'll be able to enjoy these long-blooming flowers for many months on end until they go back to sleep for the winter. Below are shade and full-sun perennial flowers that bloom in the summer. Plant them now and watch them flourish!

Shade long-blooming perennials

  • Hellebores
  • Astilbes
  • Fringeds leeding Hearts
  • Fumeworts
  • Bellflowers

Full-sun long-blooming perennials

  • Black-Eyed Susans
  • Husker Reds
  • Moonbeams
  • Coneflowers
  • Blanket Flowers

In many cases with perennials, you'll want to deadhead—remove the old/dead flower heads—the plants to encourage new blooming. Each variety has its own soil and watering requirements, so be sure you do some research on the types you want to plant. You can usually find care instructions on the seed packets.
