Rowers compete on Lake Norman in the 2014 Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival race.

THERE'S A DRAGON head attached to the bow of the boat and a tail adorning the stern. Twenty rowers glide across the water in unison, following the beat of an onboard drummer.  It takes strength, focus, and endurance to compete in a 200-meter dragon boat race, the Chinese flat-water sport that has been around for more than 2,000 years. Watch the competition at the annual Charlotte Asian Festival in Ramsey Creek Park on May 16. The event on Lake Norman includes a cultural program, food, dance performances, and the Miss Asia Carolinas Pageant. Race begins at 8 a.m., festival at 11 a.m.
