If you want German beer done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself.

After noticing a lack of fresh, local beer in Charlotte, longtime friends Jon Hayward and John Marrino decided to open The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (215 Southside Dr., 704-525-5644). During a three-year stay in Germany, Marrino developed a love for German beer and then decided to produce brews modeled after his favorites from Düsseldorf and Cologne.

The brewery offers two "lagered ales": OMB Copper, an altbier, and OMB Kölsner, a lighter kölsch. "They offer the best of both worlds," says Marrino. "The full flavor of an ale, and the cleanness of a lager."

Marrino and Hayward are involved with every aspect of the business, from brewing the beer to delivering it to local haunts. It's available in a growing number of restaurants and bars, including Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Brixx Pizza, and the Common Market. The brewery's taproom is open on Thursdays and Fridays 4-8 p.m. and Saturdays 1-7 p.m. For a full list of OMB carriers, visit oldemeckbrew.com.
