The Return of Chickspeare … with Beer!

Local theatergoers who have been in town for a bit likely recall fondly a group known as Chickspeare. The all-female theater company put on occasional–and excellent—performances, mainly of Shakespeare. The group went on hiatus in 2006, as fringe theater groups are wont to do. But it's making a return this summer. Beer is involved. Here's the entire press release:

(Charlotte, NC, July 20, 2012)… Charlotte’s only all-female Shakespeare Company, Chickspeare announces a return to Charlotte in partnership with NoDa Brewing Company for a ChicksBeer Event in September 2012. Chickspeare will be performing portions from the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged on September 16, 17, 23 & 24 at 7:30 at NoDa Brewing, 2229 North Davidson Street in Charlotte. Doors open at 6:30. Beer from NoDa Brewing Company and food will be available for purchase from The Tin Kitchen. Seating is limited; to reserve your space, stop by the NoDa Brewing Taproom during business hours or call 980 819-9734. Tickets $10-$20; food & show packages offered.

Chickspeare is an all-female Shakespeare company that started performing shows in the now defunct Johnson Brewery on Central Avenue in 1998 and continued to produce shows there until the brewery sold its space in 2002. Chickspeare produced shows in different Charlotte spaces until 2006 when the company went on hiatus. “Some of my most fond theater memories are from those early years at Johnson Beer,” said Sheila Snow Proctor, a Chickspeare Founder & Producer. “The opportunity of recreating that experience for a new audience with NoDa Brewing was irresistible.”

NoDa Brewing Company is a production brewery in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood that crafts small-batch premium beer and has been successfully operating since late October 2011. The owner and President of NoDa Brewing Company, Suzie Ford, recognized a partnership opportunity when she met Sheila Snow Proctor at the brewery and eventually heard about Chickspeare. “Our patrons support unique, creative events at the brewery, so this was right up our alley,” Suzie said.

Chickspeare plans to include members of the previous company as well as some new faces in the cast for ChicksBeer. For additional information, please check our website at
