This Weekend in Charlotte (3/12): Symphony, Minus the Bear, & Saturday Night Cine Club

Minus the Bear released its latest EP, Acoustics II, last year.

The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra tackles Czech composer Dvorak’s Romantic four-parter, starting Friday. Symphony No. 8 is the second in a trio of compositions considered to be his greatest achievements. The performances run for two nights.

If you’d rather enjoy some indie rock on Friday, head over to Amos’ Southend for the Minus the Bear show. The Seattle band is a staple among those with mathy sensibilities, with the 2005 LP Menos el Oso still revered for its experimentation. The band is joined by Jersey act Owel.

Matthew Mayfield provides a more subdued experience on Saturday, as he once again takes the Evening Muse stage. The Alabama singer-songwriter, formerly of the band Moses Mayfield, plays with guest artist Dean Fields.

Also: The Saturday Night Cine Club continues at Theatre Charlotte with Caesar Must Die. This Italian drama follows prisoners as they prepare to perform the beloved Shakespearean take on Caesar’s life. The film won a coveted Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

On Sunday, take a chance with two Bechtler offerings. The museum’s newest exhibition is Mario Botta: Architecture and Memory, an exhibit that displays work from a prominent postmodern architect who designed the building itself. Julius Bissier: Selected Works 1956 to 1963 (running through the end of the month) focuses on a specific time of German artist Bissier’s career, in which small formats and India ink were commonly employed.
