Van Landingham Estate Sale: Buy Furniture from Historic Charlotte Home

There will also be commercial catering equipment for sale.

Built back in 1913, the Van Landingham Estate in Plaza Midwood has endured Charlotte's growth over the past century. Famous faces such as the Belk family and Randolph Scott have graced the dining room table and chairs, and now you can purchase that exact dining set at the upcoming estate sale.

The Van Landingham Estate has changed hands of many owners—beginning with Ralph Van Landingham and Susie Harwood Van Landingham, moving to UNCC, and currently residing in the power of Billy Maddalon, who has owned the building and its five-acre parcel since 1998. Maddalon is the owner of the Morehead Inn and wanted to preserve the historical importance of the Van Landingham estate, so he turned it into an inn and event space that's been operating for 25 years.

Now, however, Maddalon is giving the home a new use. It will officially close on September 12—there are 22 townhomes being developed on the outer perimeter on the property, and the Van Landingham home itself will take on a new purpose as it is leased out for alternative use. In order to make room for new beginnings, every single thing in the house must go.

From September 11 through September 15, you can purchase many unique, antique, and historically significant items from the Van Landingham estate sale on EBTH.com. The sale is completely online via Everything But The House (EBTH), and the bidding starts at $1 for every item. Act fast and be diligent to scoop up some of the most cherished pieces such as the original couch, which you can see sitting in the Hotel Majestic lobby in 1890 in a photo from Maddalon got from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Carolina Room. The same photographic evidence goes for the estate's original dining table and chairs—the Van Landinghams hosted dinner parties and welcomed many of Charlotte society's early names to sit at the table.

All of these fascinating items are on sale beginning tomorrow. Head to this link to bid on and buy the antiques and unique furniture. The estate is hosting another sale during the same days that will auction off commercial-grade kitchen appliances and items.
