Wedding Wonka

Chris Edwards

Maybe you want something sweet in your honeymoon suite. Or maybe you want something flavorful for wedding favors. Either way, check out the following Charlotte chocolatiers for some decadent — and different — wedding treat options, including gourmet truffles and salted caramels.

Wonka Wedding

Organica Deluxe

Whether it’s the luxury products or the pretty blue packaging, Organica Deluxe is proud to be organic through and through. Among the guilt-free goodies: rich truffles, salted caramels, chocolate pavers, and ginger cookies. Consider a box of these for bridal shower favors or hotel guest gift bags. For a tastier treat, pair them with a bottle of organic champagne.

SIGNATURE SWEET: Fleur de sel caramels, individually hand dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. (Four pieces for $9.50)

Sula’s Chocolates

Owner Erika Diamond studied sculptures before sweets, which explains why her handmade truffles are built to look like their names (e.g., Aztec temple, Queen City crown). After the chocolates are infused with coffee, fine tea, liqueurs, or nuts, Diamond gives them an embellishment of edible gold dust and wraps them in paper boxes and ribbon that can be coordinated with your wedding colors. As for "Sula"? Her college nickname.

SIGNATURE SWEET: The dark truffle assortment, made up of dark French couverture chocolate and heavy cream infused with various flavors. (Four truffles for $10 or twenty truffles for $45)

Barking Dog Chocolatier

"We always maintain at least twenty-two kinds of truffles in the kitchen," says Joal Fischer, co-owner of Barking Dog. Consider the custom-designed truffle samplers or check out the handcrafted options like the chocolate peanut butter truffle on a lollipop stick and its pint-size perfect message for guests. What’s most fun about Barking Dog? All of its profits are donated to local charities.

SIGNATURE SWEET: Petite Bark Sampler featuring 61 percent Belgian dark chocolate with mini mints and nonpareils. (Ten pieces for $11)

The Secret Chocolatier

It’s no secret that The Secret Chocolatier churns out delicious choco-products: decadent fudge wedding cakes, decorated brownie pops, chocolatey chunky brownie bites, and dark semi-sweet truffles. The family business concentrates on clean, identifiable flavors (orange, espresso) that have a smooth texture and a "soft-to-the-tooth" bite. The confectioner company, which ships nationally, sources many of its ingredients from area farms, markets, and businesses.

SIGNATURE SWEET: The one-ounce artisanal truffles are infused with orange, espresso, molasses, or chai tea. ($3 per truffle; eight truffles for $21)
