Weekend Top Picks for July 22-24

It’s hot as blue blazes around here. Good thing there’s some great theater — indoor theater — going on this weekend. Seek refuge at one of these cool spots.

The Rocky Horror Show. If you’ve done the time warp before, you know it never gets old. (And, if you’ve never done it, what are you waiting for?) It’s a dark and stormy night when sweethearts Brad and Janet find themselves at the creepiest of mansions. And, a sweet transvestite is about to give the naive twosome some lessons they’ll never forget. Hunky Calvin Grant stars in the role Tim Curry made famous. See him while you can, Charlotte. The Broadway veteran (Rent) may not stick around these parts for long. actorstheatrecharlotte.org

Hairspray. Chubby, spunky Tracy Turnblad is just the heroine 1960s Baltimore needs. When she realizes her improbable dream of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, she decides to do more than shake her groove thing. She integrates the show and unites her city. CPCC Summer Theater stages the feel-good musical that was once a movie, then a Tony-winning Broadway musical, and then a movie again. Friday and Saturday at Halton Theater. Details here

The Light Factory’s First Run Film Series. A champion marathon runner would have an advantage if he were to become, say, a bank robber. That’s just what Austria’s Johann Kastenberger did. The Robber is the 2010 movie based on his time as a bank robber able to outrun the authorities. Thurs, Fri and Sat at 7:30 p.m. at Hodges Taylor Art Consultancy. lightfactory.org
