Charlotte's balmy fall weather is in full effect, and nothing goes better with a gloomy sky than a creepy pumpkin greeting guests at the front door. Whether you like your pumpkins plain, painted, or carved, there's no doubt that this October staple is a must for Charlotte front porches. And to help you get your house Halloween-ready, we've compiled a list of the best places in Charlotte to pick out your pumpkins. Make it a family outing or a one-on-one date—either way, a trip to the pumpkin patch is an autumn activity in which you'd be remiss not to participate.
Where to Buy Pumpkins in Charlotte
The Hunter Farm
13624 Providence Road, Weddington, 28104; Open seven days a week through November 17, 1 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 7 p.m. Sundays
Know before you go: Buying a pumpkin here is an adventure—to go to the pumpkin patch, you'll take a hay wagon ride to the milk barn, petting barn, and then the pumpkin patch, where your ticket price includes a 3-to-5-pound pumpkin of your choosing. Children are $9, adults are $10, and public safety officers, military members, and firefighters receive a 10 percent discount. Kids under two and their grandparents can ride for free. There will also be food trucks onsite on Saturdays this fall.
Phil Simpson's Pumpkin Lot
7661 Pineville Matthews Road, Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Know before you go: Get your fall fix at this mom-and-pop-style lot, offering pumpkins in various colors and mums, too. You can even purchase a fan-approved Panther pumpkin if you're too lazy (or incapable) to paint one yourself.
Hodges Family Farm
3900 Rocky River Road, Open 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Know before you go: This family farm has free admission and more than a pumpkin patch. There are hay bales to play on, plenty of animals to see, a gift shop, and $5 hayrides on the weekends.
Dilworth Pumpkin Patch
The corner of East Boulevard and Scott Avenue, Open on weekdays
Know before you go: This pop-up pumpkin patch will start slinging Christmas trees right around Thanksgiving.
Hall Family Farm
10713 Providence Road West, Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and weekends
Know before you go: This beloved spot operates weather-permitting, so check their Facebook Page for frequent updates. Come for the pumpkins, and stay for the corn maze, hayrides, and sinfully delicious hot apple cider doughnut sundaes.
Wise Acres Organic Farm
4701 Hartis Road, Indian Trail, 28079; Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday
Know before you go: Just outside of Charlotte in Indian Trail, kids and kids-at-heart can play in a giant corn pit, enjoy the free corn maze, and embark on a wagon ride through the woods after picking a pumpkin (69 cents per pound). Young farmers ages 12 and under can also ride on the barrel train.
Providence United Methodist Church
2810 Providence Road, Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Know before you go: This pumpkin patch is the youth ministry's project with a purpose to use proceeds to help with a newly renovated youth area at the church.
Carrigan Farms
1261 Oak Ridge Farm Highway, Mooresville; Open seven days a week 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with hayrides departing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. and every 15 minutes on weekends.
Know before you go: This Mooresville standard grows (and sells) tens of thousands of pumpkins each year, but that's not the 5th-generation-family-farm's only attraction: Treat yourself to a terrifying haunted trail experience at Scarrigan Farms—the not-for-kids trek open on select October nights for $25 per ticket.
