NoDa’s New Sour Beers to Debut Memorial Day Weekend
A long time ago (well, really in early 2016) in a galaxy far, far away (or, uh, the original brewery) …
While May the Fourth already occurred this year, NoDa Brewing is offering up a new hope of its own with the announcement that the first two beers from the brewery’s long-awaited sour program will make their official debut Memorial Day weekend.
Dubbed the Boba Brett Sour Project, you’ll be able to get the project beer’s namesake along with Ariana Saison May 29 and 30 in the North End taproom. These beers are a byproduct of NoDa’s first brewery, which had to close to the public due to space and parking issues. But while the taproom is no more, the brewery always stayed in operation for barrel aging beers such as NoDa’s Russian imperial stout, Monstro, and ones from the sour program. The latter has been in the works almost ever since NoDa’s first brewery closed a little more than a year ago.
Heading this program up is Bart Roberts, NoDa’s dubbed “Funkmaster.” Over the last year, Roberts has been hard at work in the “OG” NoDa brewery, perfecting the Boba Brett Sour Project and coming up with ideas for others (more on that in a second). Boba Brett (which if you haven’t figured it out by now gets its name from the bounty hunter in Star Wars, Boba Fett) is a pale sour ale that has been getting funky for a while now from the Brettanomyces, the beer yeasts used in creating wild ales and sour beers. Ariana Saison is a saison fermented in barrels that was blended with some of the Boba Brett base beer.
And there’s much more to come from this project and NoDa’s overall sour program. In June, the brewery plans to debut the third beer from the Boba Brett Sour Project and other beers in the works include a dark sour and dry-hopped sour. Currently residing in the original brewery are red wine and apple brandy barrels for Roberts to work his magic with, so stay tuned to see how the sour force awakens at NoDa Brewing.
