RECIPES: Two Cocktails for the Holidays

Ever had a cocktail so good, it’s like a gift to yourself? That’s the idea behind these elegant drinks mixologist Salim Tucker created for Charlotte magazine’s gift guide. These recipes from Tucker—formerly of The Crunkleton and 204 North, among others—are great for holiday celebrations or cozy nights in. Or give the ingredients as a cocktail kit for your aspiring mixologist friend.

French 75 (with a twist)

1 oz. Conniption Gin
.5 oz. Hine Cognac
.5 oz. Domaine De Canton
.5 oz. simple syrup
.5 oz. lemon juice
Champagne of your choice
Flute glass
Lemon swath to garnish

  1. Shake all ingredients over ice
  2. Strain into a flute glass
  3. Top with Champagne
  4. Garnish with a lemon swath

Post-Prohibition Old Fashioned

2 Luxardo Maraschino Cherries (editor’s note: these are dangerously good)
1 orange (two half-slices for muddling and swath for garnish)
2 oz. Doc Porters Rye Whiskey
.75 oz. Demerara Syrup
Agnostura Bitters
Orange Bitters
Old Fashioned glass
Orange swath to garnish

  1. Muddle oranges and Luxardo cherries
  2. Add whiskey, syrup, and bitters, and stir over ice to chill
  3. Double strain over fresh ice
  4. Garnish with an orange swath (flame expression if capable)
