A Jolly Holiday

Mary Poppins takes classic story to new heights

It’s touching (if a little disturbing) how much we’ll suspend sound judgment for Disney.   Modern grown-ups are seasoned to X-ray movies, books, and TV shows for their social and political themes. Yet, somehow, despite plenty of criticism to encourage otherwise, when the glistening Disney castle appears on screen, the The Lion King’s racial prototypes couldn’t matter less. Hakuna matata!…

Where Are They Now?: Jay Thomas

When he worked for WAYS-FM, Jay Thomas became Charlotte’s first shock jock. Now living mostly in Los Angeles, he’s still on the air, and he acts in movies. For a moment, Jay Thomas ponders the interview's theme. "Where are they now?" he says, sounding amused. "Well, f—, I'm right here." Actually, Thomas seems to be everywhere. He's just wrapped up his…

Music Tuesday April 6

Missed last week due to some hairy magazine deadlines, but back at it this week. I hope you’ve figured out that although I call this segment "Music Tuesday," the actual publish day is a bit, um, fluid. Not too many shows on my radar this week, but here are ones worth checking out: Thursday, April 7 Pico vs. Island Trees…

Music Tuesday March 9 Edition

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of Music Tuesday. Solid lineup of shows this week. Wish I was going to be in town to check out one or two or three, but the ACC Tournament beckons from Greensboro. March belongs to college basketball, y’all. Thursday, March 11 Robert Earl Keen at Neighborhood Theatre Though I would have been two years old…

Music Tuesday: Hoots and Hellmouth with Flashbulb Fires, Steep Canyon Rangers

Welcome to the second installment of Music Tuesdays, in which I recommend a show or three this week that, in my humble opinion, is worth checking out. Let’s get to it. Wednesday March 3 Hoots and Hellmouth with Flashbulb Fires at Evening Muse — I’ve never seen Hoots and Hellmouth, but I’ve heard good things about the Philadelphia trio. Fans…

Trend on Trial: Baby Heels

Ok, this is officially our first post about children’s attire. (I’m tempted to follow this immediately with a post on Pottery Barn Kid’s Halloween Costumes because WOW THEY ARE SO CUTE, but I’ll refrain.)Now, not having a child myself I generally try to stay away from judging mothers for their children’s attire. After all, at the rate I’m going with…

More Than a Feeling

A Boston superfan turned front man gets a shot at the limelight this summer

At the start of Boston's North American summer tour, fans showed up in everything from vintage concert tees to Home Depot aprons. The latter isn't too bizarre, considering the lead singer was recently plucked from the staff of a local Home Depot. Charlotte native Tommy DeCarlo was hired in June to fill the role of Boston's late lead singer, Brad…

The Lone Ranger Rides on Independence Blvd.

For those who don't know, actor Jay Thomas started his career as a radio personality in Charlotte, working with folks like Bob Lacey. Courtesy of the good folks at CBS and the David Letterman Show, here's a great story about a time he and the Lone Ranger got "herbed up" (his words) for a car dealership remote:

Writers’ Strike Hurts Hamilton

I was planning to blog today about Anthony Hamilton performing tonight on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno. I interviewed the Charlotte native and R&B singer a few weeks ago for our December issue (which should begin hitting newsstands in less than two weeks) and he told me then about his scheduled performance. Well, all that changed when members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike yesterday morning after they and the major TV networks and movie studios couldn’t reach an agreement on their contract.

So the TV shows currently have no writers, and it’s the late-night talk shows that are immediately affected since their scripts are written daily. Leno, Letterman, Conan, Jon Stewart—they’re all great comedians, but they have people putting words in their mouths. All of their shows ditched their schedules and began airing reruns last night. Those close to the strike say…
